This paper gives an overview of Java for embedded systems and points out the significant progress of Java in embedded systems that was done since Sun Microsystems released the first version of Java. The problems developers faced with personal Java specification and embedded Java specification and an in-depth overview of J2ME specification, OSGi, real time Java are discussed, too. EEMBC tries to develop a standard benchmark program in order to ease the selection of a suitable Java VM for a dedicated embedded system.
