Abstract

Software engineering often reaches its limits when faced with increased complexity and variability of the required software solutions or with the ongoing customer or market side requests for continuous enhancements and product innovations. Approaches towards establishing product-oriented software engineering like software product lines promise to successfully tackle such challenges. Nevertheless, for harvesting their benefits, the integration of business and product related goals with core software engineering and software life cycle activities is vital. Software product management is expected to provide this function and empirical research confirms the positive effect of mature software product management practices. However, the various frameworks available as well as established software process improvement approaches lack a comprehensive and complete coverage of product management practices. This article presents a process reference model for software product management that consolidates and extends industry best practices and is capable to guide and support organizations towards successful implementation of product-oriented software engineering.
