Abstract

The design of business processes from scratch is an intricate and challenging task for process modellers. For this reason, the reuse of core processes or process patterns for dealing with recurrent design issues of new business processes and variants thereof in a given domain has become an integral part of process modelling. A key issue in process patterns reuse involves the specialization of abstract process activities. Depending on the intended purpose of reuse, specialization of abstract process activities typically ranges from substitution of abstract process activities with sub-processes to substitution of activity labels with specializations of them. Specialization of abstract process activities by specializing their labels has hardly been investigated in the business process community so far. The main contribution of this paper is an approach to ensuring consistent specialization of abstract process activities by ensuring consistent specialization of their activity labels. For this purpose, we exploit the idea of semantic activity labels introduced in previous work. Semantic activity labels encode the linguistic meaning of process activities and thereby facilitate the establishment of consistency criteria based on the implicit semantics captured by activity labels.
